How do I work out the cost to fill my tank?
Multiply your tank size by the price per gallon (or litre). For example, a 15-gallon tank at $3.75/gallon costs $56.25 to fill from empty. This calculator converts litres and imperial gallons for you too — check your state’s average price if you’re not sure what to enter.
How far can I drive on a full tank?
Range = tank size × your fuel economy. A 15-gallon tank at 25 MPG (US) gives about 375 miles; a 50-litre tank at 6 L/100km gives about 830 km. Enter your own figures above for an estimate.
How big is a typical fuel tank?
Most small cars hold 40–45 litres (about 9–10 UK gallons), family cars 50–60 litres, and large SUVs or pickups 70–90 litres. Check your handbook or the spec sheet for the exact figure.
Should I always fill up completely?
Filling up fully means fewer trips to the station and less time exposed to price swings, which usually saves money and effort. The main exception is performance cars where a little less weight matters — for almost everyone, a full tank is the cheaper, simpler choice.
